October 6, 2007 Results
Rain, Rain, go away; come again another day.
But it’s the Pacific NW, and any day can find measurable precipitation.
Those who came to Baker Lake for the 6th running of this event found
some showers, but a nice temperature (mid-40’s throughout the
day), warm company, and hot soup at the finish. The volunteers
were awesome, helping keep the runners interested in finishing,
and enjoying the day. The Subway sandwiches and frappuccinos
refueled tired bodies and enabled sore legs to crawl into cars to
travel home at the end of a hard day.
The USFS deserves a gold medal for all their efforts to clear the
East Bank Trail from the results of the November, 2006 storm.
Working throughout the summer, and right up until the day before
the run, USFS employees and volunteers did a terrific job enabling
runners to complete their journey obstacle free.
Alex Swenson ran the men’s race uncontested,
although the next 7 places found some interesting and competitive
jockeying. The women’s race was between Brie Hyslop and
Wendy Wheeler-Jacobs, but since they were in different age groups,
both were able to take home a Montana transplanted Baker Bear.
Another Baker Lake 50K in the books, and one more runner added to
the Baker Lake Hall of Fame: Stanley Nakashima. Stan
also volunteers to trailsweep every year, enabling other runners
to pass the ribbons with exuberance, while Stan reaches to pull
them down. Thanks Stan, for all your efforts. And all
the rest of the volunteers who contributed, in the most humble way.
You made it possible for all of us.
