October 7, 2006 Results
On an out-back course, Jim Kerby and Van Phan ran
away from their respective fields on the return trip along Baker
Lake. Kerby bested the masters record by 2 minutes, while just missing
the course record of 4:13:00 established by Brandon Sybrowsky. The
men's race for the second was exciting, with last year's overall
winner and previous masters record holder Steve George just edging
out Terry Sentinella by 15 seconds. Phan remained consistent throughout
her run, besting Merita Trohimovich by two minutes.
This year's event saw superb weather conditions. It
was cool at the start, gradually warming up through the day. The
sky stayed clear for most of the run. There were commanding views
of Mt. Baker to the west, and Mt. Shuksan to the north. The winding,
forested trail was in excellent shape, offering a varied running
surface of rocks, roots, dirt, mossy wooden bridges (careful!),
and creek crossings. More than one runner took a tumble, falling
victim to fatigue and need I say, careless running! The weaving,
up and down trail skirted along the edge of Baker Lake, with a road
crossing of Upper Baker Dam twice at the southern end, and a crossing
of the Baker River suspension bridge twice at the northern end.

This run could not occur without the dedication of
the volunteers. Among many others, special mention is made of Robin
Loen and Bill Ball, who were present from the early morning
registration in the dark until the last aid table was put on the
truck to go home. Volunteers make the difference. They enable an
ordinary, run of the mill event to become something special, and
credit needs to be given to Stan Nakashima, who comes back
year after year to volunteer and trailsweep. This year Stan was
joined by Rick Haase, who together likely solved all the
sports issues and athletic stories known to man. Thanks to all of
our vounteers!
